When Do You Read Blogs?

I’ve found, for me, that if I don’t get to it in the morning, I’m far less likely to comment if I read at all. Not getting to it first thing off the bat (this is where being currently unemployed helps), I’m that much more likely to click “Mark all as read” in my Google reader.

When I was interning at the magazine, now out of business, sadly, the days I was there were hard on my blog reading. By the time I’d get done with the day all I wanted was to crash on the couch if I didn’t have someplace to be after work.

If people post on the weekend I’ll read. I generally try to read as soon as possible. (I’m almost neurotic in how often I check my reader.)

I read blogs through RSS as well, so I check on them fairly regularly when I’m using the computer for fun (weekends and evenings) and then on my phone during times like my lunch break. So I don’t really have a preference either, although I will say I really like it when people have posts queued up for holidays so something is still posted. I always seem to have a lot of spare time on holidays, and while I completely understand not posting and don’t begrudge anyone for taking a vacation day, I really enjoy it when bloggers have some little thing that they can schedule so I still have something to read.

I read blogs all the time, at my desk during quiet moments, on my phone, and on my laptop at home. here in Kuwait there isn’t a lot to do but work and sleep and I find most blogs really informative. Some are encouraging, some useful,and some funny, but I never find them boring.
I also blog on my own website, every few days if and when I find the time.
I say keep them coming, and weekends to.

If I didn’t read blogs on the weekend, I wouldn’t get to read many at all!
That is to say, I would tend to do more browsing though blogs on the weekend, if I follow a blog and get notification through my email I tend to read it straight away.
Also if I see a new blog post on FB (like this one) I tend also to read straight away…
So yes, definite more blog reading on weekends!

Usually in the morning on weekdays I take a spin through what’s in my Google Reader. Occasionally I will check again in the evening, just to keep the backlog from getting too long for the next day, and perhaps once on the weekend. There’s not usually much on the weekend. Also in the evening I may go back to read a blog more carefully if it caught my attention in the morning run-through. I prefer blog posts that are not overly long. I realize that’s subjective, but long posts are the ones I’m likely to just keep tabs on without really reading. You know, the modern reading style.

The question confuses me a little, though. If I follow a blog but don’t read a post on the day it goes up, I will read it when I return to that blog a day or two later.

I also use the scheduling tool on my own blog. I try to keep three or four posts “in the can” as it were, scheduled to be posted. If something timely comes up I can reschedule them. I post on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but I often write a post on another day if something is burning in my mind.

I am very interested in reading the response to this blog. With the differences in time zones I’ve been wondering what is the best time to post a blog or tweet. I’ve recently changed my weekly blog post to auto post at 2a.m. Tuesday mornings (South African time) and I noticed a slight increase in comments. I’ve started using hootsuite and schedule my tweet/FB updates across three time zones across different days. I do seem to be getting more clicks/comments.

I use Google Reader as well, but since I subscribe to so many blogs I view them daily. I usually check 3 times a day, varied times, every day but as list view. If the title interests me I star it, mark everything as read and go back at the end of the evening and read the starred items. I’d never be able to get through them all if I read every post and I follow so many great blogs (like yours!) I can’t bring myself to unsubscribe.

Having recently given up the ‘day job’ I don’t really have ‘week’s ds’ anymore so reading blogs is a 7/7 thing for me!

I periodically scan the blogroll on my site a few times a day (e.g. over breakfast; while I’m standing in the kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil; or in between TV programmes) and dip in and out of whatever takes my fancy.

I try to leave comments if there’s anything appropriate to say – if someone’s taken the time to write and I’ve invested time in reading what they have to say it seems reasonable to contribute. and I’d hope people who visit my blog would also be stirred to do likewise.

When there are a long list of comments I confess I often skim-read those, otherwise I’d never have time to visit other blogs!

I read whenever I am procrastinating! That means at any time. I’ve never really understood those that say you have to have a schedule on particular days (besides getting the blog author in the habit).

I really don’t know which of my favorite bloggers blog when, I just know if they are prolific or not. If you have content I want, I leave you in my feed even if you don’t blog for months. What dooms you is if I can’t remember the last time you said anything of interest on your blog, that’s when I think about the unsubscribe button.

Like many others, I read when I have the time. I also read through a Google Reader (because there are so many good ones it’s just easier). I hit the highlights every morning before work. Sometimes I will do it during my break at work. If something catches my eye, I’ll pop it open into its own screen to comment on later. Unfortunately, the week is often so busy that unless it is something incredible or from a friend, I often don’t comment.

What I do is wait til the weekend, try to remember all those that caught my eye during the week and go back to reread at a time I can comprehend everything and even take down notes.

I mainly read in the mornings, whilst eating breakfast! Yes, I eat breakfast at my desk (in my home office, not at work). As a teacher, most blogs were blocked at work. Now that I’m not a teacher anymore, my blog reading and blog commenting (and blog writing) has gone up.

When I write my own blogs, I tend try to post them (or at least wait to promote them on social media) until the work week. I can see twitter activity die on the weekends, so I assume everyone is out playing T-ball with their children. It seems to me that most people are more active online Monday-Friday…which says a lot about productivity at work!

I just found your blog off a friend’s FB page. I have a new blog, Victorian Chick, only 3 months old. I have found that I get the HIGHEST readership and response to Friday night posts. Thus I am religious about Friday night posts now unless there is absolutely no way for whatever reason I can swing it. I have gotten , with a very new blog, 50 or 65 shares on FB with posts on Friday night or Saturday morning .My review of Bridesmaids–also picked up by a blog for which I am now listed “contributor, Writers Clearinghouse Press–had some 50 shares in a 10 hour period on a Saturday.

Of course it is no news that sex sells. I am ABD in British literature and the blog is high culture, pop culture and personal reflections and if the topic–as it is in a movie review about FWB and casual dating–has even a remotely sexual overtone, the readership is triple what it will be for an essay on Kant or GEorge Eliot. Such is life.

I randomly read blogs on my phone whenever I have a free moment. It’s so cool to see what others are writing about. If there’s a blog that I really like, I subscribe to it. It goes directly to my email and I can read it whenever I’m processing my other email stuff. But for me, it doesn’t seem to matter when the post occurs. It’s when I can get to reading it.

I read the weekend blogs on Mondays, if I read them at all. Honestly, if I read every blog, everyday, I’d never write my own (twice a month) blog or get any writing done. However there is so much I learn from editors and agents blogs, it’s worth the time to pick through the ones that speak to me.

I do think the weekend blogs get the most neglect. With family time and church, reading time is almost zero.

I blog daily and on Saturday usually make it short. Then, on Saturday night, I write a poem for Sunday. It gets posted late Saturday and runs through Sunday. (no blogging for me on Sunday, it’s family day…no computer day).

It matters to regular readership but also keeps me in consistent habit. I hear the best way to improve is practice. Regular practice makes better right?

I keep telling myself that I should get into a routine but…mother of 5 teenagers, wife, author, volunteer… well that doesn’t really lend itself to a regular routine so I think I will give up. I read blogs after I have written a post myself. I typically look at four or five blogs over a period of 15 minutes. I would estimate that I spend about 30 mins per week reading other blogs, including links from my twitter feed. I’m disciplined, and only comment when I feel there is something worth saying.

I have read that you “shouldn’t” post on weekends, and my traffic does drop slightly, but I also almost always pick up new followers on the weekends. I think there are many non-blogging people who only find the time to sit and browse on a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon. Makes sense to me!
